101 East - Fight the power - 19 Mar 09 - Part 1

The Malaysian state of Sarawak plans to build 12 new hydro-electric dams along the state's waterways, saying the projects will create jobs, provide cheap renewable energy and meet the demands of future industrialisation.

The dams are supposed to push the total generating capacity in the state to 7,000MW by 2020, an increase of more than 600 per cent from the current capacity.

There are plans to expand the aluminium-smelting industry in the state which will need the planned output.

But critics question the sustainability of the project.

Corruption linked to Borneo deforestation - 15 Jul 09

Once considered the green lungs of Asia, Borneo now provides a lucrative home for palm oil growers and timber corporations.

In the second of a three-part series, Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley investigates the role of politics in the growth of palm oil plantations and timber concessions.

Malaysia's Penan tribe resist logging firms - 03 Sep 09

Armed with spears and blowpipes, hundreds of indigenous tribesmen in the jungles of Borneo island have mounted a last-ditch attempt to try to save their land from logging.

Al Jazeera's Divya Gopalan reports from Sarawak on the Penan, some of whom still live as nomadic hunter-gatherers in the rainforests of this Malaysian province.

They have been battling loggers since the 1980s, when large-scale industrial logging commenced in the Malaysian state. At times the Penan have faced intimidation and violent crackdowns at the hands of security forces hired by logging firms and Malaysian police.

Meanwhile, vast tracts of Sarawak's rainforest has been stripped of its valuable timber. Now forestry firms are eyeing forest lands for conversion to oil palm plantations, which will likely leave the Penan even worse off since these estates support less game than even logged-over forest.

Another headache for Taib Mahmud

This is outrageous and disastrous. Will the state government spend astronomical sum of Sarawakians' money to clear up the mess or just let them flow into the South China Sea? Will the culprits be prosecuted?

The Chief Minister who is in charge of issuing logging licences for the last 30 years (and indiscriminate destruction of our forests) should be held responsible

Film Tribute To Ross Boyert

Watch video at Sarawak Report HERE

Boyert had regarded himself as a friend of the Taib family and said he met the Chief Minister and his late wife Laila on a number of occasions. He told us there was never any doubt that it was Taib who was in control of his family’s businesses. He told us that he had not realised until much later that the buildings had been bought out of illegal profits from deforestation.

However, he paid an enormous price for acting as a whistle-blower against the Taibs. They retaliated with a ruthless lawsuit that saw him bankrupted and left homeless and penniless. He and his wife Jonni also complained to Sarawak Report that they had suffered sustained intimidation during the course of that lawsuit, which left them unable to pick up the pieces of their life. Last October, a few weeks after he gave us his story, he was found dead in a rare form of suspected suicide with a bag taped around his head in an LA motel room.
